Transfer Disaster
I have a 1989 Jeep Cherokee Limited in perfect condition except for the transfer case. I bought a rebuilt from a reputable transmission shop and swapped it out and made all the necessary connections, added fluid etc. I started it up and the transmission would not go into gear. The lever moved freely but the transmission would not engage. With the engine running it will not go into park without grinding. Everything seems normal besides it not going into gear and the grinding. I re-checked the linkage, wiring etc and am lost how the transmission could be giving me this much trouble. It's driving me crazy. Does anyone have any ideas? U would appreciate it.

This transfer case is a 242 model. I pulled the vacuum line off and there is no vacuum. I followed the line up to behind the valve cover area. The end is fitted with a metal elbow and it appears another line had become detached from it. I could not find the remaining line and started the engine to listen for a vacuum leak. I found none.
I then called my local 4 wheel shop and they think it's a vent line but my book says its a vacuum line.
Trying to move past all that, I been looking for a vacuum line schematic, I would like to simply replace it so I could head for the hills but can't seem to locate a schematic.
So I have two questions:
Is that line coming off the top of the 242 transfer case a vent or a vacuum line?
If it is a vacuum line then where should it plug into?
Thanks for your time people.

Ok, I'm positive I was looking at a vent tube. Cussed book says it's a vacuum line!
I will check the rear shaft being in and installed properly and if the t case is in neutral or not.
Thanks for the input!
