However If yours has an actual SYE and not a HNT you can reuse it (as long as its not damaged) just take it apart and swap the output shafts and rear tail housing ect. If your already in there its only a matter a min's to swap the input gear which will make the auto t/case fit with your manual trans.
If you have a HNT SYE it should be fine just chop the output shaft, tap it, and your good to go.
Also if you have a True SYE you have a 231, which has 2H,4H,N,4L. If you have 2H,4H part time, 4H full time, N 4L your have a 242 which can only use the HNT SYE. I would try and keep it the same as what it has unless you want the other one, if you get the other case you will want to change the shifter gate and keep the shifter arm that comes on the case.
*edit- more info with spline counts.... *

The BA-10 (1987 to mid 1988) used a 21-spline output shaft, the AX-15 and NV3550 used a 23-spline.
The AW4 (four-speed automatic) used a 21-spline output through about 1990, while the later AW4s were 23-spline. (I may have the cutoff a bit off, but 1996 and 1997 are well past it anyhow.)
The only thing that may be at issue is how far the input sticks out from the mounting face of the case - there are, I believe, three different "stick-outs" in use, and with no pattern of use of which I am aware (there very well may be one - I just don't know it.)
However, this isn't a big problem. While the helix angle of the input gearset was changed, 1996 and 1997 are still both after the changeover (late 1993 or early 1994, I believe,) so the input gear may be easily swapped if necessary. If you end up having to swap the input gear, change the input shaft seal as well (may as well - it adds two minutes to the swap, and saves you kicking yourself when it starts leaking in a fortnight from being disturbed anyhow.)
So, the swap should be G2G. It may not be a truly direct swap, but having both cases on hand should handle that.
