Default Transfer Case Whining

My transfer case (np231) has had a whine for a while now. Ive neglected it since I only use the tcase during winter. I tested the tcase out this morning on the slick neighborhood streets and it's operating fine, but the whining has gotten much louder.

I'm changing the fluid later, but is that the cause? I'm not sure the fluids been changed since it rolled out of the factory

Could be bad bearings.
Might be time for a rebuild.
