What is a normal temp?
Hello all, I've had a 97 XJ 4.0 since January. Just curious what a normal operating temp is. Mine runs 205-210. Climbing up in the hills it creeps up to 220. I know that is hot and I'm working on tracking that issue down, but is 210 normal? Thanks in advance.

Assuming your Jeep is an OEM with stock one-core radiator, 205-210 F is a normal operating temperature for your rig. If it goes up beyond 210, the electric fan will kick in to cool it down.
Otherwise, if you're worried about overheating, you can either place a hood spacer or make a hood vent to cool it down further.

Something is not running at peak efficiency. As an example my 99 stays just below 210 all the time. I have only got it to go up to about 214 when running in sand for a while. Or when we were towing a 3000 bound boat up a 2000 foot pass in 90 degree weather.

Thank you for the quick replies. I will have to check that electric fan, I have never seen it work. I will test it tonight. My rig is completely stock and almost everything is old at the moment!

If you replace the relay, it's about $10 from O-reilly's.
Even just a touch over 210 is fine. If you're near 220, you are getting hot and something's not working.

Mine out of nowhere, on highway, got well up to 230. Sometimes gets to 215ish if sitting still for awhile.
Normally; 97% of the time, she's right at 210.
Im thinking I my need to burp the system. Guy I bought it from said not too long ago he replaced the water pump.

Yes only five pulleys on the engine. Crank, waterpump, power steering. alternator, and the top idler. 95% of the time there is never a fan running. Been like that for 30k miles and the engine stays cleaner from less dust being blown around. And I would assume less heat is better on the electronic components and hoses.
