89 xj 4.0 auto 242. I have the 242 transfer case and when I'm reversing in 4H I get a howling noise, like its slipping. It does not happen in 4L or 2wd. It will reverse in 4H its just when its under load it slips. I was thinking the chain but I would think it would slip in 4L worse if that was the case. Any ideas??? Thanks.

It makes a howling sound while it slips. Only happens in reverse though while going, say over an obstacle or up a steep incline. If I put it in 4L it doesn't slip, doesn't matter the incline or obstacle.

hmmmm, sounds like a tranny issue. Have you tried going over the same obstacle in 2 wheel drive? it might be that in 4lo its not putting that much strain on the tranny and not causing the issue.

you have that crap differential inside your transfer case which is prone to fail under load, i would assume that is it, cause my wife's 249 all time 4x4 did the same thing n reverse, put a NP231 on and it was fine

Yeah I'm thinking about switching to a 231. I never even use the full time 4wd. Also it doesn't slip at all in 2wd just 4H in reverse. thanks

I have NP242 in my truck and I just replace the chain last week. If i put it in 4hi, 4ft, or 4lo and i would get on the gas even a little put it would go snap snap snap clunk snap lol. but i never had any howling, I replaced the chain and its good now. enless its skipping the gears inside you should replace the chain. IMO put a np231 in it. cuz the chain is gonna run you like 100+ and all the other goodies when im sure u could find a np231 around that price or a little bit more and be happier.
Also if you put it in 4lo and in reverse and gas it hard. It should defenetly slip.

I know it's been a very long time since anyone commented on this thread, but I'm having a similar issue on my 92 xj. When I put the transfer case into 4 Low and put the jeep under a load like climbing a hill, the vehicle kind of shakes and rattles. Did anyone find the solution?
