Default Transfer Case Shift Pattern!!!

Ok I just bought a 98 cherokee and the guy I bought if from replaced the 231 transfer case with a 242. He never put the rod on going from the shift linkage to the transfer case and it was in 4wheel when I got it. So the only thing I did was put the rod on and now the shift pattern is 4L-N-2H-4H. I'm stumped on this one cause I know its a 242-J cause I looked at the tag on the TC. It should be 2wd - 4part-time - 4full-time - N - 4LO. I took the rod back off and moved the shifter on the TC by hand and it only moves into 4 gears. Shouldnt it be 5 gears being a 242 TC. Anyone got any info.. Thanks

I think i may have figured it out. The idiot has the shift leaver pointing up on the T/C. All the pics I see of transfer cases has it pointing down.. Thats why its backwards and only going in 4 gears.. Cool

i thought you were having the same problem as me. my lift accessories and stuff that's been bolted in down there has caused the TC linkage to bind against a bolt, so it will only go into 2hi and 4part time. i've had to replace it with a novak sk-2x shifter kit.

enought about that, at least you figured your issue out.
