Transfer case info!!
Hey guys,
A buddy of mine with a 95 XJ just blew apart his t-case and I do mean BLEW APART!! He asked me if I knew if he could upgrade his t-case with the new one. He did have the NP231. Does anyone have any experience with this and can a swap from a 231 to a 242 happen?? Also, what year t-case's are compatable?? Some one told me that only a 94-95 would fit a 95. Is that true or was I getting smoke blown up my azz?? Thanks in advance!!

Why would you want to switch to a NP242 TC. Most of the parts are more expencive. I have sene sye kits will run 350+

I have had good luck with my 231, its a very good transfer case and you can update it as much as you want. I would try and stick to the same year and try and find one and rebuild it.

If he "BLEW" apart an NP231, He did one of two things: He either let it run dry of oil or he was ******* BIGTIME. The answer isn't to get a "better" TC. The answer is to take better care of your rig.

I recommend he get an Atlas or STAK TC. Pay the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to get a bullet proof TC. That would be best then the next time he drops the hammer he can break the next piece down the line. That's not built to 6 ton specs.

I agree with Buck! But if you dont have the money for that I would put in another 231 due to the aftermarket support and how cost friendly they are.

The Atlas, STAK, comment was with much sarcasm. Another NP231 and better care for the equipment is the correct answer to this problem.

Bah get a 242 if you can find it..The main concern is the spline count where it mounts to the transmission. So you will need to likely find one close the the same year.
Now did the blow out crack or mess up the housing and what not? I am curious what you mean by he blew it up..Because the housing and such isn't cracked could be a bad change, gears or bearings..If so pull it and rebuilt it. The 231's are good t-cases and if he has a lift and no SYE this would be a good time to add the SYE.

No, it really BLEW UP, like in multiple pieces all over the road and blew the front drive shaft out with the gears attached to it. Now for some info as to how this could have happened, he really has never taken the best care if it and dogged it most of the time. He has a 3" RC lift and 31" X-terrain's on her. Now for the important part!! I rode with him about 2 weeks ago and I heard a "grinding, gears grinding on gears" sound. I told him he needed to check his t-case out! Then, he lets his NASCAR wanna B, no seatbelt wearin, lead foot livin girl friend drive it to work and before she gets there, on the side of the highway, it blows the hell up.I will tell him to stick with the 231 for simplicity reasons. I really appreciate the help.
Thanks again, LCFRJEEP
