Default Transfer Case Help

I have a question about the transfer case on my 99 cherokee limited

The indicator next to the trans case lever, in order, says 2wd, 4wdH, N, 4wdL. Leads me to think it is a Command Trac setup with the NP231.

However, the plot thickens.

When I pull the lever, there appears to be a notch or stopping point midway between the 2wd and 4wdH settings. At this point, the "part time" lamp on the instrument cluster is on. If I pull back a little more, it locks into place at the 4wdH position, and the "full time" lamp on the instrument cluster illuminates. This would lead one to think it is a Selec-trac set up with the NP242.

My question is, which system do I have, command or selec? Is it possible my jeep came with the Command Trac system, had transfer case problems, and someone replaced it with a Selec-Trac transfer case?

Is there a quick way to tell which I have, is there a readily observable or discernable distinction between the NP231 and the NP242?

it came like that because you have both bulbs or it was done at a dealer, you could go get a shifter map out of a grandcherokee i6 thats has the full map(2wd, 2part 4full n 4lo)

so you're sayin' it is a selec-trac and not the standard command-trac?

Having both lamps is proof of nothing. Most of the dash light clusters are identical.. they got both the lamps regardless of what was going into the Jeep. So someone may have swapped in another T-case...

Why don't you check the tag on the T-case??? It says right on it which model it is. Crawl under the Jeep at the back of the T-case. There will be a 2 inch round aluminum tag riveted to the T-case. It will say on the top line which T-case you have.

Instead of speculating, crawl underneath and look at the tag on the back of the tcase. It will say what case it is and the low range gear ratio.
