Default Transfer case

Just bought a 93 xj and when I put it in 4 (offroad) it makes loud popping sounds from under the jeep when I turn. Is that normal? (everything is original)

its not normal- dude, could be the linkage to the transfer case is not ingaging all the way, or a bad u-joint, at worst something in the transfer case has gone for a poo, but I would check the others before anything else, cant really think of what it could be without hearing 1st hand - you say popping- sound ?

mine makes a constant rattling sound while moving. I slid under the jeep yesterday to find two large holes in the tcase lol. No fluid left in it, and I could see the chain. Guess it needs replacing now.

Maybe not popping, more of a lurching feel and sound

When my xj was doing this the other day I could figure out what it was until i took the front driveshaft off and notice it went away then when i looked close at the front ds socket in the cv joint was trashed. Now why was it just doing it when i turned idk but I know that it got worse in a hurry when it was doing it. So maybe try that it only take a few min to take it out and look. Let me know if this helps.
