My transfer case wont stay in 4wd high, only 4wd low. What could be causing that?

 

Possibly something in the shift linkage..
Could be a few things.

 

Are you shifting it properly?

Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual.

"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I let off the gas, throw the lever, and then tap the gas and let off.

4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".

 

Let me get you more info. I have a 96 2door xj, 5spd. When i take it out of gear, weather im moving in motion or at a stand still, i shift to 4 high. I then put in first gear and when i shift out of first and before getting into 2nd the tc pops out and starts to grind. However, i can put it into 4 low no problem. Dont know what the problem is and im hoping you gurus can help me

 

Shift on the fly IN gear like posted earlier and see if it stays in.
