Trans started slipping out of nowhere :(
1995, 2 wheel drive inline 6
I had been driving the jeep on a normal basis on long freeway trips (and it
has ran great of the freeway) for a few weeks with no sign of a
transmission problem then all of a sudden yesterday, out of nowhere I go
to
accelerate from a red light and the jeep doesnt move at all but the engine
revved up pretty high then I can feel the trans grab and it starts moving
It did this a few times today also. I do have a small trans leak but I add
fluid when needed.

He's asking if it's past time to change it. It should be red, not brown or black.
See my sig # 3 for how to save a hopeless transmission.

When I check the level it is clear. The transmission was rebuilt approx. 3 to 4 years ago from the PO. The trans fluid has always been clear. It does not smell bad or look dirty at all.

Could be a shift solenoid gone bad? Perhaps the 1st/2nd gear one? I'm not the one to ask about testing them though, should be able to with a voltmeter though after dropping the pan.
If the PO rebuilt it why is it leaking?

You can test the solenoids for proper resistance both at the TCU under the dash and at the connector near the trans dipstick. I don't think it's the solenoids, though, since it sounds like a TC or clutch issue. Unless by revving up high he means it is stuck in a higher gear and the TC was just trying to move the jeep against the gearing before properly engaging 1st gear.

It is leaking from the main seal at the shaft. I replaced already but still leaks.
Its not a big leak and it is manageable.
Theres no transfer case, it is rear wheel drive.
But, I cannot drive it anymore
Its just very odd that it happend so suddenly with no warning.
There should be a sensor that detects this is going to happen and a
computerized voice should say
"Transmission is going to start to slip"

I had just read these two post from another source with the same problem on a 95 like yours and then saw your post. Check it out.
>Try disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes or so. Reconnect and check it.
Clean the transmission grounds. They are on the dipstick tube.
Also look into adjusting the kick down cable.
If still nothing then unplug the tcu. Its under the glove box. It should shift manually minus 2nd gear. It will go from 1st to 3rd when you manually shift.
>UPDATE- OK, So after checking about everything electrical we could think of; TPS, Solenoid resistence, TCU, neutral safety switch, and speed sensor. We got to thinking, and we decided before we take it to the shop to be diagnosed, we would atleast see what a filter change would do. We changed the filter and BAM!!!! It was working great. Took it on a little spin around the neighborhood, and it was working like a charm. $20 for a filter and gasket, problem solved, what a relief.

See Mark's post.
I'm also wondering about "clear" fluid.....
A simple drain and fill with Dex/Merc could be in your future.

Yes, I dont know what the clear Trans fluid is but it is what was in there when I got it and it seems to have been working fine for a year or so. The fluid I have been adding a little is much darker.

Quit over thinking this and do a drain and fill with fresh fluid.

Sounds like somebody put the wrong stuff in it. I can't think of any clear transmission fluid.
Get that stuff out of there completely, using my method, and then see what happens.
If it's been running with the wrong stuff, it may be gone. But then, any time you have a slipping trans with black fluid most people say it's gone, and I have proven otherwise.
