Default Trans slips momentarily in drive...

when cold.
When I put my 1990 JK AW4 into "drive" it doesn't engage right away sometimes.
Only does it when trans. not warmed up. Otherwise works perfectly.
Should I be worried ?
Will changing the Dex/Merc blend help ?
Changed it a couple years ago. Daily driver mostly freeway miles. 269K No leaks from engine or trans : )

Check your fluid level, color, etc.
At the very least, do a drain and fill. Change the trans filter if you can. Make sure that fluid level is correct as well.

Kind sounds like the pump isn't priming when fluid is cold. Was the filter screen in the pan ever checked ??

Never checked the screen...my mechanic friend has basically same trans in his '04 Tacoma and he never takes pan off. Just drain and fill : (
I had better pull the pan I guess.

You don't really need to do anything to the screen. It's not meant to be a filter it just makes sure all the big chunks don't get into the transmission. Just drain and fill.
