any one know what type of fluid goes in a 95 5 speed . is it auto or gear oil? i also found what looks like a coolant, or vacume line on top of it. but there is no hose on it was wondering should i put one on it or, put a cap on it.

depends on the engine size...
The manual transmission takes gear oil. I prefer the lucas heavy duty 80/90 gear oil... It works great

The automatic take MOPAR ATF+4.
2.5L = MOPAR ATF PLUS (Automatic Transmission Fluid - Type 7176)

4.0L = MOPAR Automatic Transmission Fluid (P/N 4773590) or equivalent labeled DEXRON III MERCRON fluid.
Thats what Wiki says, cuz I

Nevermind, misread it.

I spent several days trying to research this lol. The original spec in my 1999 is API GL-4 75W90 gear oil, which is hard to find. I learned these two important things:

- API GL-5 rated gear oil has more extreme pressure additives for better life and protection in straight gear boxes, like differentials. Unfortunately these additives eat the brass in the AX-15's synchros. It's essentially twice the EP additives, so in other words using an API GL-5 fluid will cut the lifetime of your synchros in half. Also, many GL-5 oils these days already include a friction modifier for limited slip differentials, which is incompatible with the behavior of the synchros.
- The original Mopar part number has been superceded by 10W30 motor oil. While the consistency is the same it has a different design purpose and really shouldn't be used to lube gears. Some folks over on JeepForum got all puffed up because this part number was "confirmed by engineers". Well, I call BS... all they did was confirm that the change did indeed occur. And employees of a business that depends on selling new vehicles certainly didn't come out and say "this is the best fluid for this transmission that we didn't even design and in no way is this change at all related to the fact that this product is 13 years old and we don't want to stock old fluids for cost reasons". Many people who took this route report problems after a month.

For the AX-15, see about picking up one of these:

- Castrol Synchromesh
- Pennzoil Synchromesh
- Redline MT-90
- Redline MTL
- ACDelco Synchromesh

The Pennzoil, Castrol, and MT-90 are the proper thickness like real 75W90 gear oil, and designed not only to be compatible to the GL-4 specs and not corrode the brass, but have friction modifiers to help the synchros out. I had intended on picking up some MT-90 as it gets excellent reviews but I wasn't able to find any Redline stuff locally (everywhere I went apparently stopped carrying it...).

The Redline MTL and ACDelco oils are thinner than the others but obviously are oriented towards manual trannies. I hadn't even heard of the ACDelco stuff before I called around looking for Redline - a tech at the local VW/Audi dealership said he runs it in his TJ just fine. I hit up the ol' google and picked up 4L at NAPA that afternoon Shifting performance isn't the best, but it's definitely an upgrade over what looked like the original fluid.

The hose barb on top should be connected to a hose that leads to a plastic breather valve on the engine compartment side of the firewall.
