Default tranny issue

My 95 Cherokee has begun leaking fluid from the front seal (i am assuming it's the seal since it's leaking out of the bell housing). When it's off the fluid shows about half way between the F and L lines. After it's warm, no fluid shows on the stick. I always thought tranny fluid expanded when it's warm, so do I add fluid or not?

I know that, I just wonder about the fluid level, is there somewhere it could be pushing it to, that it drains back to when it's off. I have never had a vehicle show more fluid when not running than it does when it's running.

I was thinking the same thing, but the fact that it shows too much (normally it would be just barely on the dip stick) when it drains back is what has me confused.

I hear ya, I only checked cuz I just did the rear seal 2 weeks ago. I only have to make it until the weekend, I have another tranny with a t case in the garage that's going in. Problem is I drive 105 miles to and from work everyday.

Wow man..... thats far, and at least you have another tranny, I want to convert my XJ into a 4WD and mine doesnt sound as bad as yours so I think ill be ok with checking it every so often and filling it if i need to until I get all the stuff i need for the conversion.

Mine's kinda a forced conversion. It's a GA Jeep with 254xxx on it. Bought it with a blown motor, rebuilt my 93 block, and stuck it back together with the 2wd tranny and was waiting for all the parts to convert. When I swap the tranny I'll have everything but the front axle.

my dad owned a shop that was also an auto body shop, and a guy wrecked it and brought it in and didnt want to pay the price for it and we ended up keeping it and i sold my mazda so i could replace the front end with what i think is an 88' XJ. so its got its problems still from it being wrecked that im slowly but surely finding out about.... oh well. it was free for me! Sorta.. haha

I've got a total of about $2000 into both my jeeps including the cost of them, that includes another donor that went to scrap cuz of it's cracked frame, so an axle aint breaking the bank.

OK, so I pulled the plug before I pulled it today and got 5 and a half quarts, plus whatever spilled out of the torque converter when I popped it off.
So it wasn't low on fluid, where was it going and why?
