Question Tranny Issue

Hello everybody just bought a 94 Cherokee sport 4 door with 288,000 miles on it but 36,000 miles on new motor. brand new tires and all for 400 bucks. the problem with it is that when you go to take off in drive it slips in first gear. but if you put it 1-2 it takes off like it should. i check the tranny fluid level its good and does not smell burnt at all. not leaks and the jeep as never seen off road.... sad i know.... Im trying to find out if the tranny is going or could it be something else. any help would be great thanks

I am not too familiar with jeep transmissions or diagnosing jeep trans problems since you can usually find a good one for $50-150 and just swap the whole thing. However I know that with some other transmissions there are bands that can come loose and cause slipping.

I got a Chance to talk to my local jeep place and they said it sounded like it was the solenoids going out of the tranny there are 2 of them and the both should be replaced. now since they are about 100 a piece should i just get a junk yard tranny for 200 and call it a day?

I actually just had the same issue. Check all connections on top of the tranny. If it is still doing it then the prob is more than likely a govonor soilenoid.

How does it rev in gear? Just had a similar problem with mine. Under the dash on the passengers side is a grey box that controls the lock up/shifting. If it's bad/disconnected it could be your problem.

in all other gears it works fine. when i put it in 1-2 drives normal then i put it in drive and off she goes drives like a new tranny. it just does it when you take off in drive. will look under dash for that box and see if it is that. thanks

before ya start tearing **** apart, check your fuse on the fuse block[7.5amp] next check the TCU under the passenger side dash make sure the connector is plugged in, there is also a fuse[10amp] on that harness. the symptoms you describe sound like your electronics are not functioning properly or getting power there for when you put it in drive your starting in overdrive....then when you manually shift to first it goes like normal.

theres a pic of the plug

Up under the passenger side dash under the glovebox is the TCU and plug mud-dog27 is refering to. In that yellow tape is an inline fuse for the TCU. If it's blown or corroded, that alone could be the cause fo your problems. look there first.

FWIW, the "trans" fuse in the fusebox only affects the Power/Comfort switch (if equipped) and/or the reverse lamps.

Not likely. The symptoms are leaning more toward the TCU having no power.

Yes it is. That fuse can just get corroded in it's socket and cause those symptoms. Saw a fair number of those failures at teh dealership even when the Jeeps were fairly new. Never seemed to repeat itself on the same vehicle.

Wow I didnt realize I would have this much help. Thanks so much I will look for that fuse under the dash. The backup lights and everything works and the fuse in the fuse block is good I didnt know there was one under the dash beside the tcu so thanks for that info. Lets hope it is that. Then I can drive it without messing things up. Good to see a forum that helps. I guess with a jeep its more of a community than just a problem with some old car. Thank you all if it is the fuse I will let you know. Is there any way I can find out if the tcu is bad? If not looking at all options on this problem. I do know that there are no engine code coming up. So lets see what it is
