Default tranny flush

trying to find a write up on flushing ( orvjust replacing the fluid) in my aw4.

wondering if i should be lazy and pay a shop to do it or just do it my self.

I have read that its not good to flush the AW4

I have not changed fluid on a AW4
but it should be the same as any other automatic trany

there probably is not a drain plug so you need to loosen the pan bolts
and let the fluid drain out one corner
a big oil pan helps with this cus oil gos every were

after you let as much out as you can hold the pan up and takeout the bolts
keep the pan level so the remaining oil doesn't go all over
dump it into you container for disposal

you will need a filter kit
the kit will have instructions on how the remove and install should be just one or two small screws holding it in
make sure the pan and surface of the trany are clean
bolt the pan back up

add fluid in the engine compartment threw the trany dipstick
funnel is needed for this
after you get the fluid up to the quart low mark start up the jeep
let it warm up the with your foot on the break shift the trany threw the gears two or three times
the back to park check and add fluid as needed
run threw the gears again

Not sure how much $ the shops charge for this, but if it is reasonable, I would recommend it. I recently did it on my 98. PITA!!!! It was my first time working with an auto, but the dip stick tube has to be seperated and that was a real pain mainly because it was rusted in the joint. Plus the crossmember got in the way of the rear (3) bolts. Overall it took about 3 hours because of the rust thing. If I hadn't that problem, maybe 30-60 mintutes.

The aw4 has a drain plug at the back of the pan on the bottom.

athenscj5 how much it cost you? i was quoted 150 form pepboys, only place i called so far but i need to recall to make sure what fluid they would use.

Reliable towing by me is $100 but I dont know if they are a chain or not.

i would replace the fluid in the pan...for stuff like engines/tranny's with High milage a "flush" isnt a good idea.

Everybody I know of who has had their auto trans FLUSHED has ended up buying a new/rebuilt trans within 3-4 months.
Apparently, it is best to drain & refill, drain & refill, drain & refill until the fluid has the original color to it. That seems to be the prevailing school of thought.
It's a messy job...if you have access to a lift, i would recommend it.

All I did was drain the pan, drop it out, replace the filter, replace the gasket, and put it back on. Then I used Dex-III Merc and filled it back up. Flushing requires s machine and I don't have one.

I also didn't price the job with any local shops. But hopefully, next time I will not have the same issue with the rust.

It seems to me that if there is a hidden problem, then the flushing will make that problem evident. If there is no problem flushing should have no negative impact. The process of flushing is not what causes a transmission to need to be replaced.

If memory serves correctly, there is a drain plug, but it will not all come out this way. You have to drop the pan to actually get it all out.

drain or no drain you still need to remove the pan to change the filter

There is a 14mm drain plug at the back of the pan, draining it at the pan only lets out about 4 quarts out of the pan, the torque converter will still hold about 4-5 quarts of dirty fluid.

The best way to do a trans flush is with a flush machine, at our shop we use a company called BG. This uses a deturgent and flushes the entire system with 16 quarts of fluid.
