Default Tranny fluid pan seal...

A while back I purchased a cork seal and filter at Checkers. Yesterday my kids thought it would make a good hula hoop, tore it into 2 pieces. I'm thinking of making them put it in now! 3 and 6 year old can manage that right?!

So, any reason I couldn't use RTV and make a gasket?

Thanks!

Been down this road on my previous Jeep, and facing it on my current one.

Save yourself repeat work. Get another one and dock their allowance. Or make them assistants: getting you a beer, holding a light (that's not needed - we all know the attention span of kids....), etc.

Avoid using cork gaskets on trannies.

Napa carries the rubber gasket for about $15. If you buy a new filter there's one already in the box.

I've used Ultra-Blue or Ultra-Black on all of the trans pans I've removed in the last ten years. No gaskets, no leaks. Make sure the seating surface is CLEAN, though.

This is a debate that will never be solved. I would use a rubber gasket on this transmission. If the pan was made of thicker steel, then I would use RTV. Be careful with RTV, too much can cause problems and clog things up.

Trying to understand this statement. Only reason I can come up with is that we drive off road vehicles that can clunk on rocks. Clunk hard enough and it could break the seal? I don't wheel anything that extreme, so if this is the reason, I'm safe.

I think I will just use the RTV sparingly and make sure the mating surfaces are good and clean prior to application. To be honest, my last Jeep was leaking profusely with a cork seal. I chalked it up to my stupidity of not making certain the surfaces were extra clean. Oh well, up to the current owner now.

On the Chrysler three speed front wheel drive transaxle, RTV was used, no gasket from the factory. The pan was was made from some pretty thick steel and very rigid without a raised ridge on the mating surface of the pan. The AX4 and 42re pans are made of thinner steel and have a raised ridge on the mating surface, it could tweak and not seal as well as if there were a gasket instead of sillycone.
