Straight from the 1995 owners manual:
TOWING-FRONT END LIFTED (SLING-TYPE)
4WD XJ VEHICLES
(1) Raise the rear of the vehicle off the ground and
install tow dollies under rear wheels.
(2) Attach a J-hook to the disabled vehicle at the
left side of front the axle.
(3) Position the sling crossbar close to the J-hook
and below the front bumper (Fig. 6).
(4) Secure a chain to the right side of vehicle by
placing it over the axle shaft tube and attaching it to
a structural member
(4) Attach the safety chains to the vehicle.
(5) Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position to
unlock the steering wheel.
(6) Shift transfer case to NEUTRAL.
I guess I forgot the dollies under the rear wheels. Oh well no problems 2 years later.

if you're gonna haul with front wheels on the dolly, pull the rear drive shaft, this way you won't need to put anything in neutral.
remember, if you leave the trans in neutral and town with the rear wheels turning, you will burn out the trans as everything inside will be turning but the pump won't be running, unless you have the jeep engine running.

If you're renting the dolly, a trailer is only about $18 more at U-haul.
My daughter totaled a '97 Grand with the 4.0 and part-time 4WD. The owner's manual stated that you must pull the rear drive shaft if you tow it by the front wheels raised and secured.
I told the flatbed driver this and he disconnected the rear shaft. He already had a non-driveable vehicle on the flat bed. He was wanting to double-tow them to the auction.
