How can i tell if my 96 Xj has a tow package?If it doesn't, apparently it's towing capacity is about 2000. What would happen if I tried to tow a 3400 lb trailer with it's own 'pulse brakes?'

IDK about the XJs, but the ZJs had 3.73 gears, a lighting package to change the 6-light system to the trailer's 4-lights, and a trans cooler. Some of them also had an auxiliary electric cooling fan. It is also suggested to lock out O/D while towing.
Remember you'll be towing about the same weight as your XJ! My dad's Chevy Suburban had a torque converter temperature gauge in it redlined at 240*.

You can request a build sheet and it would tell you. The important parts of the "towing package" you need and the transmission cooler, hitch and light hookups. The package also had heavy duty leafs.

Let me tell you about those"pulse brakes!" I once towed a U-Haul trailer with them and I went over a double set of railroad tracks. That trailer was hopping and skidding all around with the tires chirping. It seems like every time the trailer tongue gets a braking pulse, it sets the brakes hard.
