Default Towing w/XJ??

Has anyone every towed anything significant with their XJ?? I've always been curious if the XJ would tow my 22' boat. I'm too big of a 'gina to hook it up and actually see. Plus, I don't have a proper hitch anyways. I don't have one large enough, but I thought about adding one.

The boat stays in dry storage, but my contract is about to end with the marina. I was curious if the XJ (to be lifted in the near future) would tow my boat 5 miles to the lake . . . Plus pull it out of the water at a fairly steep launch ramp. Or if you would pull it down the highway to the FL Keys!!!

FYI, my XJ is a '92 Sport w/ auto trans.

Thanks!

Should be fine if you have a class III hitch. I've never pulled anything heavy with mine, but my hitch is rated for 5200 lbs or something like that..

Here's a buddies old XJ. The rear springs are a bit stiffer then on a stock one..but to give you an idea of what you can pull.

Here is another XJ that was going to try to pull a car trailer.

I can tell you that U-haul wont even let me rent a tow dolly let alone a car trailer. I tow my 5x8 trailer loaded down all the time on four hour trips most of the time. 65 is usually my max speed if I am really heavy. I would try it and see.

22' boat might be at the XJs limits for towing. The class III hitch is strong enough but it still attaches to the sheetmetal frame rails with a nut strip. Not my idea of sturdy.

Not just that....

A 101 inch wheel base trying to keep that boat and trailer under control. Not to mention the Cherokee's less than stellar reputation for braking power...

I know of a guy that tows his 97 TJ on a trailer behind his 95 XJ...

He has the same trailer as me... I tow my XJ behind my full-size 6000 lb. Ford truck. With only a 139 inch wheelbase. And I still don't always feel safe like that. Lets just say I don't let that guy behind me.. and I try and stay as far away from him as possible on the road....

Yeah lets not mention those or he won't want to tow a thing at all with his XJ.

Ive pulled with a car dolley and other times with tow bumpers. Ive towed a volkswagen gti, a commanche and two jeep cherokees and have had a problem. I did use caution every time obviously but no problems.

I was wheeling and had a hitch in my class three hitch. I slid back down the hill and my hitch dug into the ground, ripped it right from the rig.

It would do ok just moving it around or short pulls. I pull an aluminum 2 place w/ 2 snowmobiles with my xj, and would not feel safe pulling any more than that for any distance. JMO

I would suggest a cheap truck if it's in the cards. That would be risky proposition on a couple of levels, IMHO. Good luck!!

I flat towed an 80 CJ5 sitting on 35's 100 miles to a trail. The XJ did really good, just had to make sure I gave plenty of room to stop. What does your boat weigh, most are pretty light so you should be fine.

Hmmm. . . . Not everyone seems confident that the XJ'll tow the boat. I wish I knew what the boat weighs.

This isn't my exact boat, but the same model. Just a typical 21' (I lied, I thought it was 22') Cutty Cabin. I tried lookin for the specs online, but I can't find chit.

Edit: I found it. The dry weight is 3000lbs.
