Too much fuel in the tank?

Has anyone else experienced this on their Cherokee? Sometimes when I put gas in my 2000 Cherokee with the 4.0L I6 the pump doesn't automatically shut off until it has put in 0.5-2 gallons too much gas which of course causes the needle on the fuel gauge to go past the full line. It did this on my last 2000 Cherokee 4.0L I6 as well but not my 99 Cherokee 4.0L I6.

The gauges are always inaccurate. I have put in 13 gallons from half a tank, 7 gallons from 3/8 of a tank, and after I fill it its always a few mm above full. Or at least mine is.

Before reading the below possibilities, how do you know you are putting in too much, besides just the gauge? If you are basing it off just the gauge, the issue probably doesn't actually exist and instead you should blame a faulty float/sender.
A lot of the pumps are different, at least around here. Is there a chance someone modified your filler hoses to allow for more fuel to enter the tank before it shuts the fuel flow off?
You need that extra space for the vapor to go when exposed to heat obviously. It could be that the tank is not the correct one, maybe something is odd about the filler/vent hoses?

Mine has the same issue, it's a 99 Limited and the filler never seems to pop. I end up with the needle way past the full and when it's at rest it leaks and the entire truck smells. My Check Engine has also been on and the code read an emissions leak? My mechanic smoked the tank and didn't find a leak, the only other option is to drop the tank. Could it be the filler neck?

x2, me as well but I have the opposite issue where pump will shut off after only putting in a gal or 2 into an empty tank. especially the pump with the plastic/rubber boot that covers around the filler hole will pumping.
Believe it or not...
The gas pump would shut-off prematurely on me when I fueled my '99 XJ Ltd while the engine was running. Consequently, it never got filled past the "F" on my gauge.
I didn't really realize what was happening until I began shutting off my engine at the gas pump. Now the gas shuts off at a more appropriate time and I can fill past the "F".
The only other time it gave me an untrue reading on the fuel gauge was when I flexed it on the pump island while filling up (not).

Well since this has been an issue on two of my cherokee's I doubt its a modification thing. Also on my last Jeep I thought it was a sensor problem so I replaced the whole pump assembly and it didnt fix it. Like you said pumps are different which is why different pumps put n different amounts. My 99 Cherokee didnt have this issue but both my 2000's do so maybe its a problem with this year Jeep. Also with both 00's it didnt do this when I first bought them but after owning them for a couple months they started doing this.

Help a fellow Jeeper out and give him/her your excess gas. LOL. Don't let it go to waste.
