That's what I'm talking about....gas station pumps r regulated and frequently tested not only for accuracy but also for safety (leaks, auto shut-off, etc.)....guess I should have been more clear. 'On the vehicle' fuel pumps/gauges r not regulated/tested by fed/state agencies....just the pumps at gas stations.

Are you getting ripped off at the pump?

If you can find the general area that's leaking, wipe it dry with a paper towel and look to see where it gets damp again. You'll probably find a small pinhole somewhere.

A few things to remember when you're filling up. It's best to fill up early in the morning or late in the evening. During the heat of the day, the fuel in your tank (as well as the fuel coming out of the gas nozzle) will expand and you'll get less gas. Running the gas nozzle wide open will also cause premature shut off. It's best to fill at medium speed or less.

If you trying to keep track of your MPG, it's best to fill up at the same station and same time of day each time. I've noticed at some stations, when the pump shuts off (I don't top off), my needle will move to just barely above full. At one or two however, using the exact same filling method, the needle will end up several mm above full.

I think there may be something wrong with my fuel level sensor as well. Even with a full tank, I can watch the needle move down to the F or below when I accelerate, then back to where it was once my speed has leveled off.

I don't think I've driven a vehicle where full was actuallu at the F mark. On my 1999 there's maybe 5L above the Full mark until the pump shuts off automatically. More if you feather it and let it overflow, lol.

I didn't really realize what was happening until I began shutting off my engine at the gas pump. Now the gas shuts off at a more appropriate time and I can fill past the "F".

The only other time it gave me an untrue reading on the fuel gauge was when I flexed it on the pump island while filling up (not).
Ehhh... Where do you live that allowed that?! If you tried filling with the engine running here without a damn good excuse (-40 weather) you'd be hit with a serious fine when the cops/fire dept showed up and probably banned from that store

It's the same way here, signs at gas stations say "Turn off motor before re-fueling". But isn't that why signs of all kinds r put up........to be ignored, or for target practice. LOL

yea you're suppose to shut of the engine while filling, never really seen anyone enforce that in the states tho.

I've never heard of anyone keeping the car on while filling up...

Cause they're dead.

Really because I'm not dead. 90% of car fires at a pump are caused because the people get back in the car and the static created is enough to ignite the fumes.
