So I've had some issues with my oil pressure reading ever since the oild change place broke my sensor. They installed a new one, but that one went bad after 3 or 4 months.
When the replacement went bad, my pressure spiked to past 80. I originally thought it ws the gauge, so I replaced that last week and still had the same issue.
So, I picked up a new sensor from Advanced Auto Parts and installed it last night.
Here's what happens now.....
- Before start up, gauge reads over 80 (just sits that high, on or off)
- turn ignition to ON position, gauge drops to zero
- start engine, gauge spikes again
Anyone have any idea what is causing this? Is it another bad sensor? Did I not screw the sensor in tight enough? How tight should it be?
Such a simple item......I just want it fixed already!!
Look forward to any info anyone can provide. Thanks

It almost sounds like the gauge is grounded out. When I was looking into replacing the garbage factory unit I read that the gauge pegs at full pressure when grounded. This solves any CEL issues if you go with a mechanical gauge and ditch the factory crap.

I actually have a similar problem. Mine is spiked over 80 while off and when I turn it on it spikes even further. But some one told me that I probably have the wrong sending unit. I bought mine from autozone. I'll have to look up the thread I started a while ago but he explained it perfectly. I just have no money right now to go out and buy a new one. When I'm at my computer I'll try and pull up the threAd for ya.

Gotta tell you that I have seen more than a few issues with aftermarket sending units.
I buy plenty of aftermarket parts, but the oil pressure sending unit is one of the items that I purchase directly from the Jeep dealership. Worth the extra money. Around $61 for the last one I fixed, if memory serves me.

When I had the old one in, I did this test and it seemed to stay pegged no matter what.
With this new unit, I at least get the needle to drop to zero with the ignition in ON position.
If it is infact a ground issue, are there any write-ups on repairing this without going to an aftermarket manual sending unit?
