Default thud when rolling after a stop

I have a 2001 cherokee with an aw4 trans. this is my problem: after i come to a stop from 30mph or above i sometimes get a thud when i take my foot off the brake but before i press the gas. the thud seems to be more severe the faster i was going. It happens every time i stop facing down hill. It also only happens when its warm outside. Once winter came it stopped happening.

thanks for any suggestions

My 99 was doing the same thing when I bought it. My t-case chain was badly stretched, instead of replacing the chain I just swapped the whole t-case out for one that i picked up from a buddy of mine. The problem stopped. i'm not sure if it was the chain or something else in the t-case. It could also be your drums/shoes sticking or out of adjustment.

Yea sounds like back brakes hanging. Mine was doing the same thing. You can also try tightening the U bolts, shocks and shackles...Tj

with the jeep sitting on flat ground i found out that my front driveshaft can be twisted and the sleeve yoke has some play when i push it up and down. this only happens in 2wd drive. when i have it in 4wd the shaft doesnt move. The rear shaft doesnt move at all, but i found that the rear pinion seal is leaking so ill have to fix that.

I might have the same problem. I notice mine more when I put it into gear.

I am still looking into it.
I am thinking I need to tighten the bolts on the suspension again.
It started after the lift kit and the transfer drop kit.
but i did drive it for a few days with a slight vibration before the drop kit. it is on a 3.5 inch so i do not think i damaged anything.

Mine does this as well.

Almost like the stopping has wound something up and then it THUDS back when you let off the brake. And it settles back down???

I'll watch this thread...

Mine tends to do the same thing, not all the time but still does it. What I try to do is slow down a little more early and stay easy on the brakes. When I take off instead of just hitting the gas, I will let of the brake and slowly ease on the gas. I try to take it easy on the brakes and gas to avoid the clunk or jerking. Not sure what it is because I just had the rear drums replaced and the front rotors and pads replaced.

Default thud when rolling after a stop

this is going to be the most far fetched answer you've ever heard, but who knows, it might work. In the early to mid '70s, there were numerous writeups in all the four wheel drive magazines of a similar problem with Chevy Blazers. What they said was that the slip yoke on the driveshafts were dry. The fix was to pump some good grease into them, and the noise would go away. This may not work with the original 231 or 242 rear, but maybe the front. Or maybe the rear just needs to be pulled out of the slip sleeve, and grease the heck out of it, put it back in. Who knows, maybe the bushing in the tailshaft is worn out. The slipyoke may be getting cocked in the sleeve, then relaxing causing the clunk. Besides, you wanted to check the universal joints anyway, right? Good Luck. Let us know
