I pulled back the rubber boot over the splines on the rear shaft and there wasn't any grease in there. The clamp on one side of the boot was even loose. I took the ujoint straps off and tried to pull the driveshaft out but had a bunch of trouble separating the drive shaft from the differential yoke. I put a long screw driver between the ujoint and the yoke and tried the pry them apart. I only got one side to barely move then I stopped and put it back together because I didn't want to end up breaking something like I have before.
So my question is can anyone give me tips on how to pull the shaft out?
Thanks

spray some pb blaster on the splines and then collapse the shaft by either adding weight to the rear or with a hammer. When the shaft is collapsed remove the ujoint bolts and lift the rear of the jeep by the body.

I put some grease in the front slip joint, and greased the splines in the rear shaft. I took it out for a quick test drive and the problem seems to be gone.
Thanks everyone for your help!!!

never mind i lied. It is still clunking. I did find out that if i shift into neutral before i stop i dont get any clunk at all. I recently changed the tranny fluid and filter so i know there is the right amount of fluid in there.

I have a similar problem, and when it happens it feels like something is shifting underneath me. I thought maybe my u-joints are just worn out. But I also know something is wrong with the chain in my t-case, but would that affect it in 2wd?

Well I would think that its not something in my transfercase because it has been rebuilt. I have checked the mount to the crossmember by trying to lift the transfercase with a pry bar, which is what the haynes manual said to do. I don't know how good of a test that is though, it seems like the tranmission and tranfercae would be too heavy to lift like that.

this is going to be the most far fetched answer you've ever heard, but who knows, it might work. In the early to mid '70s, there were numerous writeups in all the four wheel drive magazines of a similar problem with Chevy Blazers. What they said was that the slip yoke on the driveshafts were dry. The fix was to pump some good grease into them, and the noise would go away. This may not work with the original 231 or 242 rear, but maybe the front. Or maybe the rear just needs to be pulled out of the slip sleeve, and grease the heck out of it, put it back in. Who knows, maybe the bushing in the tailshaft is worn out. The slipyoke may be getting cocked in the sleeve, then relaxing causing the clunk. Besides, you wanted to check the universal joints anyway, right? Good Luck. Let us know

so here is a video of my transmission mount while it thuds. what do you think? is it supposed to move that much?

I took mine to a mechanic for them to check it out, so I can't say if any sort of movement is normal. I'm not very good with trying to fix things, I usually just end up making things worse.
But it would seem to me that if the thud happens at the same time that we are seeing the transmission move, then that would be the likely problem. The transmission mount could be loose, like mine. It could also be worn out and need to be replaced.
