Well the weather has been a little crappy so time to do some maintenance. I pulled the throttle body off and cleaned it. I also cleaned the IAC put it back on and took my wife for a test drive. I couldn't believe the difference it made. Ran up tp 80 real quick and smooth as glass idling. I did find a way to clean the smaller section of the IAC's housing by using my shotgun and large bore rifle cleaning kit.

 

Nice! Good tip on the bore cleaner.

Hmmm. Now you have me wondering if Hoppe's #9 would be a good TB cleaner.....

Bought it through the store from one of our outside suppliers. Thinking I paid about $13 for it.
At the time I was adding a lot of factory options to my Jeep that she did not come with.
I would buy new hardware if I could but sometimes had to reuse the old stuff.
Used it mostly on the nuts.
Between that, Evapo-Rust, cutting oil, and my thread restorer tool was able to get things nice nice.

I used some brushes from Harbor Freight. The ones from the paint aisle, not the expensive automotive department ones.

 

I started using a hot tank to get them cleaned up.

 

 

The technician I worked with had like a 18 inch long flexible coffee pot / bottle brush that he would use on the throttle body / upper intake.

Hey so, if I wanted to do something like this, what are the sensors I should look at? Anything in the air intake path I suppose?
Anything else? Just looking for a little cleanup and then possibly reap some benefits (slightly better MPG, better idle, all maybes...).
I'm savvy on how to clean them all safely without ruining them, just not sure how many and where they are all. ive had my XJ about 1.5 years, but haven't had to jump into this type of maintenance yet...

RockyMtn96XJ - I simply watched multiple videos and jumped in. A very easy job that was fun to do. Now the method Cummins93 used is on another level all together. Just be careful with the connectors since these are older cars and we know how much heat the 4.0 generates under the hood.

 

Going from the first picture in this thread, see below

The throttle body is bolted to the intake manifold, follow the big hose from your air intake.
IAC = idle air control valve
TPS = throttle position sensor
MAP= Manifold absolute pressure sensor

Disconnect all those from their wiring harness/connectors
Remove the IAC, TPS and MAP from the throttle body
Mechanically clean the IAC and Throttle body as best as you can, take your time, dont be too rough with the IAC spindle
You can clean the MAP as well if you want, but I have never done that, just replaced mine when it was needed.
Clean all the connections and matinv surfaces before you put them back onto the throttlebody
Use a new throttle body gasket

Good maintenenance done
