Default take a while to start

I have a 96 cherokee and you have to crank the engine over for a while before it will start. I believe leaving the key turned to ignition on for a few seconds to pump gas into the engine helps this problem. I read somewhere that something in the fuel pump goes bad and leaks causing a pressure problem causing the car to struggle to start/get fuel to the engine right away. Does any of this sound right? should I replace the fuel pump? And can having this problem cut you milage per gallon down because of loss of fuel pressure? Anyone got a tutorial on how to swap fuel pump in a 96?

It is a very common problem, just leave the key in the "on" position for a couple of seconds and that should help your problem.

there is a check valve in the fuel pump, if you put a inline check valve in the fuel line this will fix your problem...

The check valve for a BMW is the best fix for your leaking fuel pump check valve. Pricey but permanent repair. The BMW one will last as long as the Jeep does easily. But they are arounf $80 I think. Thought about doing it my own self but saw the price and decided to just keep cranking the starter.

BTW the ECU needs to get three pulses from the CPS before it will allow the injectors to fire the fuel into the engine so that is also a contributing factor to the slow start on all 4.0L engines.

When I price the check valve here in MI about 2 months back I found it for $35 and that's alot cheaper than a fuel pump or a killed starter from the extra cranking....

Does anyone know what the part number is or if I can use any check valve or does it have to be a bmw check valve?

I just know the BMW check valve has a 0 fail rate and have heard it will last through several pumps.

Yep that's the # You can call your local BMW dealer and order it through them... Ya from what I've heard once you do this mod you'll be all set..

And as a side note most(not all) but most Jeeps that are for sale with a bad fuel pump just need this mod to fix them...

Hope all the info helps you..

If it;s not the fuel system, you might check your CPS (crank positioning sensor).

Thanks for the part number, my dad will be happy when I fix his truck for cheap. And if it's not the pump I will replace the cps sensor 360.

Good luck. The check valve will do it. Can't be the CPS because it does eventually start. When the CPS goes bad it is like turning off a switch. They are either good or bad no in between IYKWIM.
