so the other day my 4wd died it was making terrible noises and was having trouble engaging. so today me and some buddies were working on finding out why and lucky me my transfer case is shot
so i have two options go rip one out of a junkyard ive found a few. or ive seen online t-case rebuild kits. does anyone have any experience with the rebuild kits? is it a good idea? do they work? any input would be great.
also is there a way to figure out how many splines without dissasembling anything.

Yes I have rebuilt a couple and it isn't hard to do. You will need a coulpe of large snapring pliers but no other special tools. If the case is intact then I would rebuils it.
If, as your info indicates, you have a '95 then you have 23 splines. 21 splines stopped in 91 and only a few of the 91s were 21 spliners most were 23 spline cases after 90 when they were phased out in favor of the 23s. The only ones in91 that got a 21 spline were the first ones built until the 21s ran out.

Suggest not to buy a kit until you see the inside of it first... My 94 had the same problem but it broke other parts inside too that you can't get with a rebuild kit. I got a t-case and driveshaft out of a 99 because of the output design that eliminates the rearmost part of the housing and actually got a good deal on it. Everything works fine now.
