Default T-Case question

while trying to change oil seal on 96 sport 4.0 auto, I have discovered my tail housing doesn't match the expldd view. It looks like one in a mod kit however numbers match the main case. The seal seems to have a snap ring preventing it from seating and if I were to proceed it looks like it may damage the seal as well.
So my question is how far does the shaft normally stick out? Or is that seal supposed to seat against the ring? Does that ring serve any purpose? Not the one deeper in next to the bearing race.I mean the one that is right in my way even with where the seal is supposed to go!

A pic of what you are describing would be real handy.

The best thing to do with this as well as many other sites is to use an image hosting service such as photobucket. Then you can post unlimited pics.

You need to retain that snap ring. Just replace the seal.
