Put the transfer case in 4Low. This is how I did mine (99 w/ NP231) a week ago and it went smoothly. Yes, the transmission should be in neutral WITH YOUR WHEELS CHOCKED. Disconnect the front driveshaft and ziptie or wiretie it to the side; you'll need to be able to pull the front output shaft out a little when you remove and reinstall the chain on the inside of the transfer case.

So If I am pulling front driveshaft I assume I am removing the yoke.

You don't have to completely remove the front DS unless you're going to use it as the rear DS.
I guess I'm saying just disconnect the transfer case end of the driveshaft and hang it to the side. I just put mine in 4High and drove on my front DS (after reconnecting it to the transfer case) until my new rear DS comes in.

Seems like a complicated project, but it's not that bad if you have the time and diligence. Do everything by the instructions and take your time.
