How about this its not a safety device. A seatbelt prevents you from ejecting from a car; an airbag cushion you in event of an accident. A sway bar does none of this no lawyer could build a case that a swaybar is a safety device because its not if anything its a suspension enhancing device. Performance versions of cars come with stiffer coils that's a suspension enhancing device, I put better shocks in my jeep those are suspension enhancing devices. By your arguement anyone with a lifted jeep should be shot and killed since they have modified what diamler/chrysler deemed would fit the "handling profile" of an xj. Got larger tires? Those are not what diamler/chrysler built the breaks and suspension to handle you should get sued for that to. All in all I can drive without them you can drive with them I don't give a **** I feel safe driving without them as does my wife the jeep's factory breaking scares me more than 5lbs worth of sway bar ever would.

I actually made some disconnects yesterday because I was bored

honestly it doesnt handle THAT much differently, maybe if I had softer XJ springs it would.

the original question was whether or not it was legal, and it is legal to remove them, so they are removed...sorry if this offends you

Alright man. You're absolutely right, your original question was whether or not it was legal. No one can deny that. But what you also said was "any input is appreciated" ... Lol, so you kinda asked for it

The only way is to check your state law. I was curious about Ohio's law so I started digging....

4513.021 Bumper height - vehicle modifications.

  • (D) No person shall modify any motor vehicle registered in this state in such a manner as to cause the vehicle body or chassis to come in contact with the ground, expose the fuel tank to damage from collision, or cause the wheels to come in contact with the body under normal operation, and no person shall disconnect any part of the original suspension system of the vehicle to defeat the safe operation of that system.

Does that pertain to the front sway bar? Maybe... might be a gotcha so watch out for that kind of thing in your state law...

I took my rear one off, and don't even know it is gone. Did it when I did an Old Man Emu lift. I go through cematery curve in Easton, PA everyday on the way to work. I can still do it at 60 MPH, without any funny stuff. I would not take off the front. Left mine disconecked once back on road, till I hit the first curve. I pulled over, and reconecked it.
