Default swapping unfortunately

What all do I need to swap a aw4 in 88 that has a 5spd.I know driveshaft, flywheel, block plate and I read some sensors need to be changed.can I use my 5spd tcase? Will any aw4 work from any year since they are all pretty much the same? Do I need a ecm for the auto or will the manual work? What sensors do I need swapped and will I have to mess other the trans tunnel.

search theres a ton of threads on 5spd to AW4, and dont gimmie that crap bout the search feature sucking...your also not limited to cherokee forum, im in the middle of an AW4-AX15 swap and thats pretty much all i could find was the opposite of what i want but i still got my swap figured.

from the sounds of things you arent too excited bout going auto....why not just drop in another 5spd, the AX15 in particular, and in all honesty that AW4 conversion is gunna suck given all the electronics your going to need to run, electronic components will involve the proper harness to connect your NSS, TPS, CPS, PCU, TCU, added brackets for the throttle body for kickdown cable, and a crap load more....seriously half the stuff going through the firewall i just cut out as it was too much hassle to pull through and route it otherwise and hell i didnt need it anyway.

I'm looking for the cheapest way to get it running. Can't do the ax-15 swap right now cause I don't have money for a different tcase. The ax15 Trans.diff linkage.driveshaft.and whatever else ill need.I only paid 700 for the Jeep .I guess ill see about finding another 86-88 5spd to replace it.

So... What is wrong with your tranny? Does it just need the clutch and pressure plate replaced, or a gear or two?

Tell us what is specifically wrong with the tranny, and there is a really good chance we can help you fix your current tranny and spend a lot less money than buying another tranny.

An auto vs manual can be simpler and better for crawling.

im guessing by "he" you mean the guy you bought it off of........keep in mind selling a vehicle doesnt actually mean you have to tell the truth, as said give us an idea of whats wrong, does it move? like give us something, cause you say you want an affordable fix, which IMO going to an AW4 will be at least $1000 if you get stuff used for really cheap and do the work yourself.

my AW4>AX15 swap is hovering around $1400CDN at the moment but thats with all new sensors, clutch kit, slave and hardware and i did the work myself, converting to auto would cost much more i would guess but thats not the route i went so you would search around and find a thread on the topic as there are lots and most will post a ballpark figure .

Thats what I was trying to say, try to point in the right direction, but at the same time, i can completely understand being more than weary about digging in a tranny the first time. I was scared sh!tless about having to replace my clutch and pressure plate in my wrangler the first time... but i was on the side of the road with the tools in my tool box and it was icy, windy and snowing... luckily i was near my dads, and spent the night there til the next day when I was able to get the parts from advanced auto... The only place close enough with items in stock. lol.

If you point us in the direction of why your tranny isn't working, we can help, and walk you trhough a correction to make it work. I mean, if it is really low on the fluid, it may not work, and that is a REALLY CHEAP FIX... so give us a heads up, and we will do all in our power to help you make the best fix for the cheapest price, as we have all been there, and learned.

If he said the slave cylinder is out of it, why not look at the slave cylinder? they are pretty cheap to replace..n I am unfamiliar with AX-5 trannys, but i see they have an interior slave cylinder. but if you look into that, it could be leaking or just be bad. a new one cost about 80-90 bucks at advanced auto, and should be an easy fix. If it is whining a lot, I would also check fluid levels, and just drain it and refill it.

I apologize for lack of knowledge on an AX-5... I have worked a lot on the bell housing side of the AX-15, with the external slave cylinder and clutch and pressure place. But I am sure if you either find a thread, or ask someone on your thread how to replace the salve cylinder, they can help.

I'd just hate to see a good tranny go because of something easy and cheap to fix, and GOOD LUCK on it.
