Default swapping my 2.5 for 4.0 straight six

i have an 86 xj and i was thinking of taking out my 2.5L and putting in the 4.0 straight six. the 2.5 doesnt really have power as it is, and now that it has close to 250k miles on it, i figured its time for an upgrade. it'll be my first swap so i was just gonna see if everything should be pretty straight forward or if there should be any major run-ins(unexpected problems) i should be aware of? any pointers or tips? Thanks!

i know they get roughly the same mpg, but the I6 is better on longevity. i've heard good things bout the I6 but not too much on the v8. Also the I6 makes the same torque at a lower rpm. so i think i'll stick with the I6

its an extensive amount of work....better off buying a 4.0l jeep but if your set on doing the swap there are a few write ups on pirate4x4.

it will take some time but can be done.....have to have all engine control wiring and such.....

i started to swap a 4.0 in my 2.8l commanche and thats a whole new set of probs. i decided to put in a 350 instead because it cost about the same!!!

good luck if you decide to do it.

oh yeah, a four cylinder cherokee is gonna get the same milage as a 4.0l because of the power to wieght ratio

put some 5.13 gears in that beast a wheel it like you stole it mang!!!

well the only reason i'm not gonna just buy a new one, is cuz i have a pretty decent body, but my 2.5 has about 250k mi on it, plus the previous owner didn't really take care of it and there's quite a few bolts and other misc parts missing and stuff rigged so i just want to start fresh and have a more reliable ride.

but thanks for your input

been there done that. Extensive cutting on the firewall is required.. along with re-wireing etc.. its not impossible. just impracticle. XJ's are a dime a dozen.. its alot of work.. in your boat, i would sell the jeep for 500-800 and buy a 4.0litre for a grand..

Sorry guys, I love a nice small block chevy in my street toys... but the 4.0 Jeep is the best engine ever made for these things... would never swap a V8 into one.

Right, but in all honesty it will be less of a headache and less problems to just sell what you have and buy a XJ with a 4.0 already in it. nw-xj-scott really did sum it up the best for you...

a buddy of mine did this swap. it took him a month with all the problems he ran into. Then he put a v8 in it about a year latter, go for the v8 if your going to go through the trouble. Just sell and buy a new one.
