supercharger and megasquirt. you can get the eaton m90 for around 100 bucks if you ask on local forums. there are two here in corpus i can get for 100 bucks each. they are very common coming on tons of cars. for less then 1k you can have your charger and your engine managment system (megasquirt). then all you have to do is figure your charger mounting.

Fuel pump
Bigger Injectors
And countless hours tunning..........
Inline six is hands down way to stay. If you build it right, any inline engine will outlast a v engine any day. Inline engine are only engines that are truly balanced. Sure v engines have harmonic balancers... but. They work until you start changing say, compression on two cylinders on one bank. Now the balancer isnt going to work properly, causing faster wear on the engine.

If youre going to trail ride or mud at all, stroke it.. you wont have to worry about higher temperatures and overheating as bad without boost.
Sure its more money, but better option imo

Who is doing the labor? Where? tools needed?
You will not see 'boatloads' of power, click here for Real dyno numbers
45lb injectors waay too big.
*Jeep: Large hole on 4 wheels that you pour money into
BOAT-Break Out Another Thousand
JEEP-Just Empty 'Er Pockets
SC get a kit and it is all done for you or do it yourself and need a wideband to tune
V8 need need to 'splice' 2 computers to get everything to work, If trail rig only- great idea, DD- too much involved. Lots of time and labor.
Click on my sig 'M62S/C' there is lots of good info there about all this.

Engines are something I do know a little about and debated many options on my own upcoming build two were stroker and Turbo setup a Supercharger was not considered.
I have ran all these setups in my life most were Carbs as they made the most HP for many years. Once you use anyone of these setups you intend to increase HP either by the stroker as the name implies increase compression, Turbo either a larger one or increase fuel pressure the last increase/decrease cog size and lots of HD parts. All of these choices require one thing to get them to preform properly and use the HP you have created $$$$. That my friend is "FUEL" High Octane fuel at least "93" or lower if you use a booster in it. I do not have to in my Wagon as it has 8.9 compression ratio and I can decrease the tune using the Laptop for street about 700hp and run on 91 oct.
I decided to do my rebuild as "almost" stock except for a complete race prep of the block. I'm using race parts where I can like forged rotating Assembly, balanced (Eagle) lightweight. Then Head porting by same shop on their flow bench. This engine was the best choice "For Me" and the way I intend to use my XJ, in this sport I know very well that one size does not FIT ALL.
I you after more HP increase do an engine swap IMHO there are some great options out there to do so, my only objection to the ones I liked were they didn't often show mileage of over 1/4 of a million on any. As most all of us know the 4.0 is just getting broken in at 150,000
