I bought my XJ a couple of months back, when I bought it the a/c did not work. The seller told me that it needed freon, so once I got it home I got my gauge, it read that it was actually HIGH (too much freon), so I released the appropriate amount & got it down to the "full" section on the gauge. Still no a/c...so I went to the fuse panel under the dash, the a/c fuse is good...the big fuse under the hood is good as well (i replaced it). My compressor is NOT locked up b/c I can spin it with my hand...it just won't engage when I turn the module to a/c. This has left me very confused, any ideas on what else I could try?? Any and all advice/ideas are appreciated!!

1st, check the plugs on the back of the A/C control on the dash( all of them) that was(and still is) my problem, ive seen this happen on alot of jeeps where the plugs are melted which causes it to not work correctly......also your jeep is probably gonna leak freon now. I would say the OP probably bought a can or so of the r134 from walmart and just filled it till the air was cold. You did a good thing letting the pressure off on the system because most all A/C systems i know of require you to put a vaccum pump and create a vaccum for the r134 to fill so that way it isnt in a pressurized enviroment(neutral whatever, hopefully you get what i mean).
on the other hand I could be wrong and you could have no leak at all....but the only way to find out is to check it out
good luck

bypass the low pressure switch. Just make a jumper wire. if the comp. turns on after that buy a new one. I had to and it was like 5 bucks for a new switch

X2 on the melted wires thing. I re wired some stuff and made new connections on the end and my A/C would turn on again. I have looked in several JY cherokees and everyone has melted wiring and plugs to some extent. Mine was so bad I had the chip the old plugs off.

I tried to jump the low pressure switch and got nothing...guess I need to check my harness now on the back of a/c module for melting? I was hoping the jumper would get it running but it didn't. Any more ideas please let me know. Thanks
