Default Strobes and more strobes.

Building my second cherokee, and trying to go with kind of a search and rescue/ bug out theme.
I do a ton of night driving and wheeling...and these would be a great addition to the jeep for the upcoming winter...not only off road but in those white out conditions/ times when police inform people to stay off the roads... Of course us jeepers never listen....

Where do you guys that run strobes, get them?

And how do you wire them in together?..only ones I have seen on eBay all have there own switches for each set/pair....have you just cut the switches out and re-wired them to a switch of your choosing?

For instance I want to run two amber, two white in all three rear windows, and also same in the grille. I want all the whites on one switch and all the ambers on one switch.

I have plenty of switches, 40amp relays and plugs to go with...

Ideas? Advice?

Thanks in advance.

Strobes in foul Wx that interferes with visibility? Not necessarily a good idea.

If you're dealing with fog, heavy rain, or snow in "white-out" conditions, a very bright strobe is more likely to leave purple blotches on your retinas for a while than anything else.

This is why I have 35W bulbs in my fog lamps - I get better visibility with them.

If you expect foul Wx to screw with visibility, know that "more light" is the wrong way to go - less light, and better-quality light are what you want.

Strobes are for others to see you not for you to see better,Honestly i wouldn't even use them you might get hit with impersonating a cop.

First off, you need to look into your state statutes. For example, in Florida, I can lawfully only use amber and white when I'm LAWFULLY stopped on the side of the road. Without the knowledge of your state statutes, you SHOULD NOT even think about adding them. For example, you may only have Amber facing the rear and Amber/White facing the front in some states.

Now with all that being said, look at my build thread (link is in my sig). My current setup, which has since changed a little bit, is in there with a video, pics and everything. https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f46/wh...132602/index7/

If you really want to learn how to wire, what to wire, best bang for your buck etc etc, look at elightbars.org

Now, I have strobe tubes in my reverse lights and tail lights. I got a killer deal on a 6 head pack and tubes made by Whelen. But, now that LED technology has stepped up so much, I might take a look at LED Hide-a-Ways such as Fenix Cannons.

My suggestion of brands:

Whelen (USA made, EXPENSIVE AS ALL HELL, but is a great company and the #1 supplier for LE, Fire, EMS etc etc)
Fenix (once again if you have the money)
Advanced Warning Lights
Strobesnmore

Thanks for all the info...I will be looking into state laws on this.

My plan was not to see with such lighting, but to be seen...as someone stated more light = less visibility. I'm aware of this, hence not using brights in heavy fog/rain/snow...

I like lights, and like to know that people have no excuse for not seeing my jeep in front of them. Or behind them for that matter. il be running amber led tube lighting in the grille and going to try to do some recessed red led tubes in the hatch, as running/tail lights along with the factory lighting.

Did you look into my build thread? Here's my suggestion for bare minimum. Granted, everything I have learned is based off of emergency vehicles but it still works.
  • Dashlight (either one that is Amber/White split or One Amber, One White)
  • Intersection/Side coverage (I have one on the front quarter panel and one in the rear glass on each side)
  • Amber light in back glass or even a whole bar (Advanced Warning Lights rx-46)
  • Strobe/LED HAW's (one lamp in each brake light and one in each turn signal)

You do no want any white facing the rear contrary to what you see on most emergency lighting packages. Some people do get confused sadly enough.

RESEARCH STATE LAWS!
I can't stress that enough. Keep yourself out of jail.

Red strobes are for fire/ems only here.

Anybody not associated with emergency services here in NC, (fire/ems/police) can only run amber/white.

I think strobes can be a useful tool to have in certain emergencies and I like the idea of having them so others can see you but placement/direction/output are key. You don't need to go purchase $1000 worth of Whelen strobes or LED's for something that might one day happen. Or that you might one day need. In all honesty, If you are wanting something that will help people find you when you breakdown in a blizzard then a top mounted strobe like on a school bus (at least they are around here) would be perfect. It's a small dome shaped single strobe tube. I know even during the thickest fogs, I can see the light flashing from a bus. If you are set on forward/rear facing strobes then deff go LED. They draw next to nothing as compared to strobes and can be cheaper.

I buy all my stuff from here... http://www.extremetacticaldynamics.com/
