Default STOCK -- biggest tire

Howdy guys --- Have to replace the tires soon on my stock 2000 Cherokee XJ. I was going to wait and do a 2-3" lift first; but property taxes are due and can not do it this year.
I have the so-called FREEDOM XJ with 16 inch wheels --- what is the biggest tire I can put on without doing any cutting ???

thanks, Randy from Oceanside, CA

I know that with 15 inch wheels the biggest you can go if 30x9.5. With that you may get some rub at full turn. I can't imagine the one inch difference making a big difference. 235's will fit. Most 235's measure out to be 29 inches tall

What a new and original question! No way search would have turned up any results at all.

Smarta$$, but correct. This question has been asked a million times. The size of your wheel is irrelevant, a 30" tire is a 30" tire whether it has a 5" wheel in it or a 25" wheel.

I had an 89xj with factory Rims and 32 11.5 15 junk wildcats and only rubbed at full lock, was useless offroad. Id think a 235 85 16 (32x9) would fit with minor trim to front bumper trim.

Rim diameter doesn't effect overall size. Rim diameter just determines how big the hole in the middle of the tire there is. You'll have more room for bigger brakes, but thats not a big draw for most folks.

Backspacing and rim WIDTH are pretty important in this case.

And to answer the question...no one will be able to answer with 100% accuracy. Its going to depend on how broken in (read "saggy") your springs are in the front and back.

Default Tire size

Thanks guys --- just wanted a rough estimate before I visit the tire shop.

Last thing I want is have them too big. I do not mind a little cutting,
but nothing major yet.

Correct, the only way to find out would be to mock up different tires with the suspension at full compression & full lock.

Cragars soft 8's with 235's will give you an agressive look

I think some 25 inch rims would look awesome on an XJ.
