Default Steering column moves.

My steering column on my 1989 Cherokee is "loose" and moving up and down, is there like a bolt I have to tighten to keep it in place or something?

yea, I just did mine a few months ago, very long and annoying process but once you do it once it's easy. Look up GM steering column tightening on YouTube. Lots of videos. Some are not on jeeps but they still have the same steering column. U will need a few specialty tools such as sterling wheel puller, lock plate removal tool and GM steering column pin removal tool (I think that's what it's called). I was able to get by with only the GM steering column pin removal tool but it will be easier with the other tools too.

Yea, One heck of a job, I just did mine a bit back. I needed to buy a $10 pivot pin extractor, and you need a 1/4 inch extension for that goofy "inverted E8 torx" Or whatever that is. Then the red locktite and the free steering-wheel puller.

I bet I speak for allot of first timers here. "Man what a bicch...a bunch of steps which are mostly all a challenge" then... Wow I did it, how cool is that!" It's a real challenge, but also very satisfying to complete. This link was really helpful, (thank you Cruiser!) http://www.elcaminocentral.com/showthread.php?t=27192

yeah, i've done it once.
then i just kept spare columns around from old parts jeeps. less than 20 minutes for a complete swap.

is your jeep lifted? i figure i was going through them because i would grab the steering wheel to help pull myself in every time.

And do you know if there's any YouTube vids on it? I could just go to the scrapyard and get a whole column

it's really only three bolts to tighten. Not worth buying an entire column over.

plus, a column at the junkyard will probably have the same problem. It's a common issue. And if it doesn't, the locktight is almost 20 yrs old so it will probably get loose soon
