have someone try cranking the motor then get under the XJ and take a hammer and tap the starter. If it is "sticking a little" then it should turn over and start.

It amazes me how many different answers this guy is getting. And especially ones that have nothing to do with his problems. Like people are just shouting out stuff randomly. If you dont know anything about cars honestly and your just yelling out stuff you think it could be. Dont bother posting your just confusing the original poster, and possibly causing that person to buy un-needed parts and wasting time.

Bro, you dont have a clue, quit confusing folks throwing out your dumbass answers ok. The computer isnt going to keep the starter from turning the engine over. This is not a NO START issue, its a NO CRANK issue, there is a differance.

I agree. Those bench test they do on starters and alternators at the parts store are inconclusive at best.
If replacing the starter doesn't solve your problem and you still get the clunking. See if you can turn the engine over by hand using a socket and break over bar on the front of the crankshaft. Lets make sure the engine isn't seized up. I'm not sure the condition of the vehicle so Im just throwing that out there.

Your neutral safety switch aka NSS is intermittent. They can be removed and repaired.
