starting issues 2
Hi everyone,
Owner of an 1997 XJ limited I6 4L AW4 in France since last april, i have some starting issues:
-the cherokee starts always at the second firing
-i fire it 2 or 3 seconds (won't start)
-when i fire it the second time, it's works !
I changed the battery, all spark plugs and wirings, iginition system, cleaned the neutral safety switch and the stater looks good.
Has someone an idea ?
PS: little boy dream car, what an amazing truck !!!

Thanks for your answer. I didn't check the fuel filter. It is located with the fuel pump in the gas tank, that's correct ?
My cherokee runs also with LGP.

This is a fairly common problem on XJs, and is usually caused by a leaking check valve in the fuel pump assy. Put a fuel pressure gauge on the rail, start the Jeep, and then when you shut it down, see if the pressure holds. If it drops quickly, it's either the above-mentioned check valve, or a leaking injector.
Tell me more about the LPG - sounds interesting!

Thanks for answer, seems a bit tricky but i will check leaks and fuel pressure.
Regarding LGP, it's common in France to run with LGP on 4 liter XJs.Fuel is quite expensive here, 7.8$ the gallon and LGP is only 3.02$. You can easily see the difference !
LGP fitting on my cherokee was made by a previous owner. You have a special tank in the car ( under the truck or in the rear case) and a special fuel assembly.
LGP is cheaper but the car fuel average consumption is higher, at slow RPM when you're stopped the engine vibrates like a diesel.Apparently no danger for your engine.
That's why i drive once with gas and once with LGP, i alternate. In France 80% cars are diesel.
Have a good day

I changed the fuel filter 2 days ago and now my XJ starts like a champ ! Thank you for your advice.
With a manometer on the fuel line i measured 68psi engine hot, pressure immediatly falling to zero when engine shut down.
After fuel filter change I had normal fuel pressure engine hot (53 psi) and engine shut down pressure was kept into the fuel line.
Now my cherokee starts immediately at the first firing, but what a mess to get down the fuel tank with those rusted bolts !! WD40 is my friend
