Default starting issues

I have a 2001 cherokee with 56k miles with some issues starting up from time to time. It started about a week after I bought it. It starts up fine the first 2 or 3 cranks, (I turn it on and off quite a bit sometimes depending on what I'm doing that day) after those few times it starts up real rough almost puttering then calming down after a few minutes. Just yesterday I started it up and it actually bogged out and died on me twice before the third time I just stuck it in reverse and made it move so it wouldnt die on me. What are some possible issues I might be facing?

Possible causes... Fuel pump or check valve, crank position sensor, battery etc

Refresh all grounds and battery connections.

Test crank position sensor.

Clean the throttle body with throttle body cleaner, do clean the idle air control sensor too.

You are very lucky to find an XJ with only 56k miles on it, hell its not even broken in yet.

Had a similar issue with my 97 xj. Check fuel psi at the rail with a gauge.....so you can rule out the pump.....my problem was the crank position sensor.

I think the 00-01s had an issue with heat soak in the fuel rail. Hopefully someone else can add more info.

Tough to check that CPS...not imposable I guess. If I had one of those I'd go get my codes read free at the auto parts store, write them down, then post them here.

We are assuming you have dealt with stuff like the plugs, cap rotor and plug wires? Champion Copper plugs gaped at .035, (check the new)(OR NTK's for post 99?) No goofy "platinum" (those really suck). I've seen AC fall apart. I'll actually clean my cap and stuff in the kitchen sink and re-gap my plugs a few times. You might want to go new and just check the gap on the new plugs.

Just for fun, check the gap on yours now. (I'll take .055, for 1000 Alex)

+1. Similar symptoms to what the OP mentions.

Wrapping the injectors might help, as does a foil heat shield Chrysler sells.
P/N CBXCB060 , see pic below- it should've been installed as part of a recall.

Makes sense, I'm going to be looking into these and see if i can pinpoint the problem. I've replaced the battery once a few months after I bought it because it died on me. Which led me to think it could be an alternator issue? At least this gives me an idea of where to start.

You know, I have not checked the gaps. Working the rest of the night but I will let you know the verdict tomorrow.
