Default starter issues. cannot disengage

Okay, I just did a motor swap over the weekend and now when my starter is fully tightened it will turn over and my jeep will start fine but the starter cant seem to disengage and I can hear it grinding. I loosened it a couple turns and tried it again and its fine now but its loose. I thought all starters for the cherokees were the same? Also, a buddy of mine recommended shimming the starter to where its at now since its good. I then heard from someone else that this is a bad idea. I am kind of at a loss at this point. Thoughts?

I would shim the starter as running around with a loose starter is not a good idea!

could shimming it hurt anything? I'm not entirely sure I don't see why it would but who knows haha
