Default Stalling problem

I just replaced my fuel pump and sending unit on my 87 xj and now it keeps stalling out. If I’m on the highway and up to speed, it does fine. But when I’m at low rpm it cuts off but it cranks right back up every time. What’s causing this? Could there be air or trash in the line that’s causing it to cut out?

Did you replace the fuel filter at the same time? If not, you shoulda.

Little bit off-topic, but you should go to www.cruiser54.com and complete tips 1 through 5 ASAP.

yea the fuel filter is new. I bled the air out but it’s still cutting off. I’m gonna check and see if there’s a bad electrical connection from the pump to the sending unit tomorrow

My '87 does not, but does yours have a fuel pump ballast resistor? If so, try bypassing it temporarily. When starting, it's bypassed via the ignition switch, but the pump is powered by the resistor while running normally. My thought is to see if its a current issue with the new pump.

Great suggestion.

I think the fuel pump ballasts started mid-'87. And, if I recall, wasn't there a TSB around late '87 to '88 that the dealer could install one? I think it required changing the pins of a relay so the DRB would see the change as an '88 model year... or something to that nature.

What brand is the filter? Is the rubber line from the tank to the filter partially kinked? Did crap get in it and clog it? When I replaced my pump, I also replaced all the rubber hoses (as well as the tank, filler neck and roll-over valves... due to the tank was leaking as a result of age). My point is it wouldn't hurt to replace the hose due to age anyway. I don't think it's a vapor-lock issue in the tank as the fuel is mostly returned, and there (when new) was a light vacuum on the tank for vapors to be drawn to the carbon canister for burning later.

I'll think some more.
