Well maybee the XJ is getting tired of waiting 10 min for your friend
do you let it idle when waiting or do you turn her off?
if you let her idle she might be getting a dirty engne
check the condition of the plugs, wires and rotor/ cap assembly
might as well be your fuel filter

I had a similar issue the other day. Mine turned out to be the fuel pump. It didn't stall per se, I would drive it for a few minutes (running beautifully) shut her down and when I would try to start it, it would idle like it was starving for fuel then stall. Then it would take me 10 minutes before it would start again. No check engine light, no issues.

Put it into self check mode after the 2nd time it did it. Start, bring rpm's to 2500, let it come back to idle, ac on, cycle through, off, shift through the gears, then turn off, key on, key off, key on, key off, key on. The check engine light did it's little flashing thing and gave me 2 codes, using the book (Haynes) I checked them and one said it was a pinched vent line from the tank, the other gave me a fuel pump relay issue. So I replaced the fuel pump.

I would say put it in self test and see what comes up, self test picks up issues that didn't illuminate the check engine light. That would give you a place to begin looking.

Alien electromagnetic interferences at that stop, change route and geez, tell your friend to hurry up, you sit ten minutes freezing your azz waiting in front of his house....

Ok apart from the jokes
THERE IS NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT/CODES ON A 1989 CHEROKEE, just in case this was going to be said in the future.

You prolly have a low fuel pressure or your IAC is malfunctioning.
Check your fuel press with a gauge WHEN IT DIES, yes this means you have to drive your cherokee with a hose coming out from under the hood and a gauge ducktaped to your windshield.

Next morning, when you start the jeep at YOUR home and it's idling FINE, unplug the IAC connector and drive to your friends house and repeat the daily routine. If it doesn't die at the stop, it's the IAC.

Really no check engine light, I thought those became standard after like 85. Well shoots that idea then.

No, on renix injection the O2 sensor is not significant, it will just switch to open loop operation and continue to work fine even with the O2 sensor not working.

i have similar symptoms...its my vac lines and 'breather' on the valve cover.

try checking these in order
1.vac lines(holes,worn...missing?)
2.breather on valve cover(seal, not hooked to carb?)
3.carb adjust(doubt it)
less important:
1. air filter
2. fuel filter
3. t-stat? (maybe you should leave it running that ten mins)
4.(least likely;plugs spark, wires cap, dist)
mine has 453k btw
