Default Speedometer/tach inop trip meter and odometer both work

96 Cherokee right hand drive. The speedometer and tach have both decided to intermittently not work. However the odometer and trip meter both still work when the speedometer doesn't. From looking at the wiring diagrams it would appear that the speedometer and odometer get their signal from the same wire so it makes no sense to me why 1 works and the other doesn't. Any idea's before I tear into it?

Are you -sure- the odometer is still working when the speedometer is not?

I had intermittent speedo not working on the original gauge set for my 95 and the odometer would not turn when the speedometer wasn't running. I put the full gauge cluster in and haven't had a speedometer failure since. I'd check the wiring and connection first - which means pulling the cluster.

Yep, the odometer and trip meter are both still working even when the tach and speedometer don't. That is what has me puzzled.

try giving the "screen" directly above the speedo a firm rap with the knuckles, and see if it springs to life.

both my '96 do this (speedo only)..I think it is an instrument lube issue, but may be electrical

you may have more than one issue, cant hurt

I'll try that the next time it is broke. This morning going to work only the tach was inop. Started delivering the mail and everything worked all day even on bumpy unpaved roads.

Yep. A little "Love Tap" to the top of the dash seems to do the trick.

I strongly suspect this to be due to a lack of lubrication in the needle bearing mechanism, rather than electrical

Cool! Another mailman in a '96 RHD! And hello again to you @awg . Are you still around @sgarver ?

I too have a speedometer that's intermittent in function at best, but odometer is constantly working. So your saying just smack the dash above the speedometer?

I know this is a side note, but my trip meter sometimes does not work after setting back to zero.

Just wiggling the reset gets it back to working.
Some times love taps, and just playing with something enough gets it back to it's younger days.
