Question Speedometer stops and airbag light comes on

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and hope that someone with some background can help me out. I'm very unmechanical and am looking for a simple response (in Layman's terms). I have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport. Recently the airbag light has been coming on and the speedometer stops working. The vehicle seems to still operate fine. This lasts for a bit and then fixes itself. Is this a common problem and can I tell my mechanic what to look for?

Hi and welcome to CF from Tj…may be a loose connection on the plug behind the dash. Not much help but you have to start somewhere...Tj

It is a common problem. The connector in the back of the cluster is made of two different metals. If you take it apart, and clean it the problem goes away. Either that or bang on the dash on the right side of the cluster.

There's your problem and your fix. The banging thing still fixes mine when it goes on the blink!

this is a common problem on my 99 xj i dont feel like pulling out my dash to fix the problem so i normally give the top of the dash in front of the steering wheel a good smackin and it fixes itself for a few weeks to a month

Yeah, I get the same problem. Usually banging on the cluster area fixes it.

A couple times it wouldn't go away and I pushed in all my fuses, both under the passenger kick panel and under the hood, and that fixed it.

Mine does the same thing, just like everyone else is saying, a good ol' smack to the top of the dash fixes it for awile... although I wish mine was like 99WhiteLightening's in lasting for a few weeks or a month, mine needs a whack every day or two... sometimes it'll really be a little rascal and make me hit it multiple times in a row.
