The speaker wire that runs through the door usually develops a short due to the opening and closing of the door. It has happened on all of my xj's. Just replace the speaker wire and the speakers will work again. 10 min fix.

I just did mine this weekend and found out that the problem with mine was the actual connector on the speaker. I ran new wires and tried to use the original connector but it wouldn't work right. I just soldered the new wires directly to the speaker and it worked great then.

Recommend running the wires through the rubber boot? Seems like that would be more than a ten min fix. I followed the wires through the boot and I couldn't locate any issues- but I know the speakers are good. I figure running new wires would be a smart first step in troubleshooting. I'm worried that the front-rear-left-right lever thing is just bad.

the first thing I have replaced in every vehicle Ive ever owned is the factory stereo. get rid of the crappy head unit, buy some new speakers and run new wires if necessary . add some bass if you like. you could spend 150 on speakers, wire and a head unit and it will be way better than stock. check out www.crutchfield.com/
they are the best and very helpfull if you ever run into a problem

I think I may have the same problem, My front passenger speaker sometimes tries to play but if it does it usually sounds bad. You guys would suggest checking the wiring and connections? and If it is the wiring, what kind of wires do I need to replace them?

you need some speaker wire to hook up speakers.

running new speaker wire can be kind of a pain but its not all that hard

Just tie the new wire to the old and pull it into the cabin, split it and put a connector to hook up to the speaker.

You can find speaker wire at an electronics store. Dont worry bout getting the name brand expensive crap doesnt make much of a difference.
