Yeah those things are pricey!

Can someone explain to me the difference between component speakers and full range?

I understand that most everyone has used 6.5" aftermarket speakers in their doors without much, if any, modification. The biggest problem I heard here is limited depth, so how deep is too deep? I would like to keep the factory door panel grills if at all possible. Thanks!

This is just the way I understand it but here it goes...

full range speakers have the woofer and the tweeter built together. Components have the woofer mounted in the door and the seperate tweeter mounted somewhere else, like on your door panel or sail panel or somewhere as close to your ears as possible. Component systems also have external crossovers that send the highs to the tweeters and the lows to the woofers in the door. Full range has the crossover built into the speaker. I dont actually have components yet but i like the idea cause there supposed to sound like your at the concert...

6 months ago I put JL Audio TRs in the front, and Wal-Mart "Road Masters" in the rear soundbar. This was a huge improvement over stock. Then last week, I put in a new stereo, Clarion cz209 I think. This was another huge upgrade for my untrained caveman ears. And I can play cee-dees now!

Not sure how helpful it is to try to recommend speakers in an online text-based forum though...

I'd second that recommendation to look at crutchfield.com for good info. And for parts, I like partsexpress.com a lot.

What about subs and porting your boxes? I have two 8s in small truck boxes from a previous rig that didn't allow for larger speakers. They have never sounded terrific, but a buddy told me I should port the boxes for a clearer sound. Does anyone have a take on this or an article I could read on the benefits of porting speakers?

Thanks,
s

It depends on what you're looking to get out of your subs. Porting does give a bit clearer sound quality, but if you're looking for sound pressure the box should be sealed.

Q: In my 96 there are a pair of connectors for speakers underneath the dash, behind the panel just above the center console (where the ashtray is) on each side of the vehicle. Does anyone know what connector mates with the factory ones I've described?

Chances are if those 8s were in those boxes it would be best that way, you'll get the most out of them that way, I have a ported box, But I have 2 Infinity 12s and the box is the exact specs for a ported box for those subs. Ported boxes are generally larger to meet specs, so porting the box you have now doesnt make much sense
