Speaker setups
Thanks, guys. It sounds nice and tight, even at loud volume. Most people are surprised at how clear it is, especially in an old XJ with mud tires and such. Even though my sub is just 8", you can really feel the bass with it mounted under the driver's seat!
I just move up to 32's and am getting ready to install a front winch bumper. After all of that and when I come up with the $$, I want to add a 10 inch sub in the rear cargo area and plan to do this:

I did a little digging, here as well as other forums, and this little box gets really good reviews. My main goal is crisp, clean sound and this one supposedly is good about being exceptionally tight. Squeaks and rattles drive me nuts!

dirtbiker.... Sorry don't have pics, right now. And I just had shoulder surgery two days ago. My Jeeps under a snow bank, and it's 3 degrees out right now. I wasn't planning on leaving my house, Until it's time to the staples out. But your right, Pull the interior panel off. And you see the fiber glass panel (glastic panel) your speakers are mounted to. I put my 6x9 up to the hole, traced around it. Measured for the mounting lip of the speaker. Marked that off inside the traced line. (I mounted my vertical, I did pull the glastic panel out also. Easier to work on) You can use a jigsaw, dremel tool. Clean up the edges with rough sandpaper. Put the glastic panel back in. Slide the interior panel into place. Reached inside the opening, and traced a line on the back of interior panel. Pulled the interior panel off. Finally found my jigsaw, That's what I used for that. (I really didn't want to cut the opening too big at this point.) threw the speakers in, the interior panel on, the grills on. Looked good. The front speakers are mounted in the sheet metal, And it would be really hard to fit 6x9 in the space provided. Mine 91' had the premium stereo pgk. for the time. And if you look up under the dash. there was two 1" tweeters (I keep wonder why there where vents in the lower dash, but nothing came out) the tweeters, I wired into each 5.25's in the doors. (the only factory speaker wire, I left in. And use. All the rest I replaced w/16ga.) So it's more like a component system. 1" tweeters in dash, 5.25's in doors, 6x9's in rear hatch. Progressively getting larger as you go back, to the sub. The way it should be. High notes should be closer (direct), Low notes farther away (uni-directional) And travel farther, and wider. Like a home theater.

I chose the sound bar option rather than the rear hatch because my 5.5 Hertz made the hatch vibrate like a cheap motel bed... 6" up top get the roof shaking pretty good too but I will fix that with Dyno-matt when the funds are available or when I break down to amp this all up. May have been able to fix the hatch rattle but I carry allot of crap and this keeps me from obstructing the speakers too.

Nice info 91limited. That's going to help a lot as soon as I get my speakers. Did you have any depth issues though? There doesn't seem to be a lot of depth to the fiberglass ridges...did you cut a hole in the bottom for the magnet? And out of curiosity, what speakers did you ue? Thanks for the help, and make sure you heal up and take it easy
Cheap$200Jeep: I was thinking the same thing. I actually did a bit of measuring on the door, and I'm pretty sure you could squeeze a 6x9 in there. Looks like it would be easier to do it in the hatch anyway, and if the 6x9s were in the front, I'd never hear the little 5 1/4s in the back! Looks like I'll probably be throwing them in the hatch for now.

Just made it. But if your worried, Pull out a 5.25's, compare it to the 6x9. Before you get too far. I used all Rockford punch series (full range 3 way 250w. The sub is 400w.) I have 250w going to each speaker from my amp, and I didn't to blow them out. I used a 5 channel Pyle amp Watts. That's 250w to each corner, 400w to my sub. My Head unit controls all the frequencies beening sent to each speaker. The amp is just turned up full on all 5 channels. (It does pay to use a good head unit.) Basically 50HZ and below goes to the sub, 50HZ to 150KHZ go the rear 6x9's, 150KHZ and above go to the 5.25's, And tweeters. It doesn't pay to send frequencies to speakers that can't handle them well. The high ranges are up it the front door area, (By the driver & passengers) The mid ranges are directly behind you. And the sub it doesn't make too much difference. Because low ranges bounce around the most. I used a Pioneer DEH 900HDD headunit. it's ten years old, But still worth about $400. (google it once, and see what this can do. Best model Pioneer ever made, other than pure digital.)
Sounds like you've got it all figured out
I just looked up the mounting depth on the speakers I ordered - 3 1/16" and the fiberglass ridges are 3 1/4" deep. Add the thickness of the plastic panel on the outside (you did install yours on top of the panel, right 91limited?) and I think I'll be fine.
Well, I guess it looks like all my questions are answered now...thanks a ton for all the help everyone! I'll try to be taking pictures and maybe do a little writeup on installing 6x9 speakers in the liftgate after I'm all done.

I am a Monster Pak-Rat! I am stripping down a '92 Explorer and found something that may be usefull in adding 6x9's. Thes may drasticaly reduce the amount of cutting needed esspesialy in the lift gate. I know the stereo shops get $20+ for spacers around here so the Bone-yards may be a good idea.
The spacer on top is from the front door and has an angle/tilt to it and helps point the speaker in the direction you want. The bottom spacer is from the rear doors and is flat/no tilt to it...

i didn't feel like messing with the 5.25 mounts so i just replaced those with new 5.25's and then went on to build a speaker box for some 6 1/2 and tweeters i had picked up...i really like this set up because its clear sounding and the box can flip around and face out the trunk which was sweet this weekend at a friend's bonfire
