From what I understand the newer xj s have a speaker rack that holds 2 speakers over rear seat. Will those fit in my 1990 xj?

The '97 and up have speaker holes molded into the headliner. You'd have to take the whole headliner.
The '96 and earlier have a removeable speaker bar. Usually in the hatch area, but you can put it where ever you want. It will fit your roof. The headliner trim peices hold it up.

Yeah thats what i figure since the body is 99% the same. I looked at my moms 96 and its held by the trim. i want to mod it to hold 6x9. I know what im geting next week.

The factory speakers in them are 5 1/4". There is plenty of room for 6 1/2" or maybe even bigger. Just be careful of the weight you put in it, you don't want it to sag. You could probably brace it up somehow.

I almost got one from a JY. Then I realized how much of a pain it would be to run the wires to another amp and then to my head unit. I already have wires for my sub, that would be too many. haha.

i bought one from a guy on ebay and paid around $40 with shipping. I installed it last week with 5 1/4" speakers that I bought on Jeepforum. It sounds great.
It can be mounted anywhere in the roof as well. Try to find one with a dome light and cover. Mine didnt have one so I had to find someone who had one.

You could be like me.

01 headliner with built in speakers
And a sound bar out of a 95 right above the front seats.

Btw. It's called a sound bar.

I have 2 in the front doors, 2 in the hatch, and a sub. odgreen has me beat. haha. My next plan is to put 6x9's in the rear doors and run wires to an amp under the back seat. My head unit is just a pain in the butt to take in and out, so that won't be for a while.
